James L. Torres graduated from the Florida State University College of Law, with honors, in 1985. His undergraduate degree, in government, is from Florida State University. After graduation, Mr. Torres joined the prominent West Palm Beach law firm of Searcy, Denney, Scarola, Barnhart & Shipley as a law clerk. In less than a year, the firm promoted him to associate. He stayed with the firm until 1993, handling mostly medical malpractice and aviation cases. Mr. Torres is a licensed private pilot and brought that expertise to the job.
Mr. Torres became a Florida Bar Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer in 1993 and moved to Brevard County to join the firm of Burger & Ville in Indian Harbour Beach. In 1996, he merged with another firm to become Alpizar, Ville, Torres & Camfield, located in Palm Bay. In 2001, members formed the current law firm of Platt, Jacobus, Fielding & Torres, LLC. Mr. Torres primarily handles medical malpractice and nursing home malpractice.
Mr. Torres professional memberships include the Florida Bar, Brevard County Bar, Continuing Legal Education Committee, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and Citizens for Public Justice. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the Technology Committee for the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers. Mr. Torres is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court, Southern District of Florida, Southern District Trial Bar, and the Middle District of Florida.
James and his wife Kim, who is also an attorney and a court mediator, have been married for 19 years. They have two daughters.
